About OSE - the Opera South East years to date

PictureDon Giovanni, 2006
From the foundations in 1978 under the banner the Essendon Ensemble, through the Hastings Opera days from 1980-97 we changed our name to Opera South East from 1998.  One does not survive in this business merely by standing still. To thrive is to evolve. It was felt that a less parochial name would be appropriate for a company which had achieved such success.  The lamentable countrywide trend away from live theatre led the company to conclude that it must seek new audiences and spread its net a little wider. In order to do so, a name, which suggested a broader geographical influence, was felt desirable.

Under its new name, the company has toured full productions and concerts to many venues in the South East. Another feature of Opera South East has been the success of its 'outreach' programme - an educational initiative establishing links with schools and involving as wide a diversity of pupils as possible in its productions. This attracted a lottery grant and was subsequently featured on Meridian Television.

The company has recently mounted several productions at St. Mary in the Castle in addition to the White Rock Theatre, enjoyed three more trips to Germany and fulfilled invitations to give performances at the prestigious Salomon's Centre.
